The BMW M2 (often referred to as the OG M2) is a high-performance compact sports car that was introduced by BMW in 2016. The 2017 model year marked the first full year of production for the M2, which was designed to appeal to driving enthusiasts who wanted a more accessible and affordable alternative to the brand's more powerful M4 and M5 models. As a long time Enthusiast of the iconic small car-big power BMWs over the years, the M2 was a must have for Performance Technic.
THE EXTERIOR
The most aggressive aspect of this M2 is the aerodynamic upgrades. We wanted a functional look with the help of factory BMW Motorsport parts. Thanks to IND, we were able to source the M2CS Racing rear wing with matching Alpine White risers and clear coated, exposed carbon fiber wing foil. We have complimented this look with side winglets, also by BMW, and a functional front splitter from RKP. The rear diffuser and mirror caps came equipped with M Performance carbon fiber. Our favorite modification may be the BMW factory option, European M2CS wheel arch trim set. These small extensions on each fender bring the entire look together with a functional and factory upgraded appeal.
The M2's handling and driving dynamics are also impressive out of the box. It comes equipped with a rear-wheel-drive platform and a sport-tuned suspension that provides a balance of comfort and responsiveness. We have upgraded the suspension to include Ohlins coilovers with Ground Control Camber Plates, Dinan Engineering sway bars with SPL linkages at the front and rear. The rear suspension has also been upgraded with Dinan Engineering adjustable rear control arms and toe links. The car's lightweight design and precise steering also contribute to its agile and nimble handling. We round out the overall approach to our M2’s handling with a beautiful set of BBS Motorsport RT88 wheels. These wheels were ordered and custom built by BBS Motorsport in Georgia. They were later refinished in a custom, satin gold face with polished outer lips, and assembled with BBS titanium fasteners. These BBS wheels are unique to the M2 with a square 19x9.5 setup, with perfect offset front and rear, which yields an aggressive and purposeful look. The tires are 275 all around without any modifications to the body.
THE INTERIOR
The interior of the M2 is functional and well-appointed. We like the old school amber lighting that ended with this model, before BMW went to mostly LED screens. The driver and passengers are treated to comfortable and supportive seats, with both front seats heated. Standard features include a 6.5-inch infotainment screen, Bluetooth connectivity, and a nine-speaker sound system (along with Carplay). We have upgraded the interior components with a slew of BMW M Performance parts.
THE ENGINE
One of the standout features of the BMW OG M2 is its engine. It is powered by a turbocharged, 3.0-liter inline-six engine (N55) that produces 365 horsepower and 343 pound-feet of torque. This engine provides the M2 with brisk acceleration, and the sound it makes is more desirable to some than the later S55 powered M2C. We have upgraded the intake, cooling, and engine software for peak performance. The engine is paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, which offers smooth and quick gear changes. We have enhanced our M2 DCT ability with the help of M4 GTS software for shifting, steering, traction control and differential. We have two different exhaust setups depending on desired use, along with all stock parts.
